Android-powered HTC Dream to sell for $199 on T-Mobile
Posted Sep 18th 2008 12:04AM by Darren Murph
With under a week to go before the HTC Dream is officially unveiled in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal has given us something juicy to gnaw on for the time being: a price. Unsurprisingly positioned to compete directly with the iPhone 3G, the Android-powered HTC Dream / G1 will go for a cool $199 (with 2-year contract, obviously) when it launches on T-Mobile, though there's no word yet on what it'll run sans subsidization. So, how do you like dem Apples?

Hopefully there will be incentives for current T-mobile subscribers.. that's a huge chunk of the market right there.
Dustin Leiblein @ Sep 18th 2008 12:29AM
The incentive is that you get an iPhone 3G competitor at the iPhone 3G's price.
I for one will be buying it sans contract (if possible), unlocking it and using it as my AT&T company issued phone.

Dream or Touch Pro? Decisions, decisions...
DssTrainer @ Sep 18th 2008 9:02AM
I'm waiting for Dream rom to be extracted and put onto the Touch pro... Best of both worlds!

Interesting point, maybe Google will "accidentally" leak out information on how to flash your iPhohne and WM phone with the Android ROM.

anyone else really disappointed in the pricing? same price as the iphone 3g for a phone that has free OS?
Seanross @ Sep 18th 2008 1:42AM
Free OS? So your saying nobody put time and effort into developing it? Are you saying the hardware cost next to nothing to make?
Thats like saying you should'nt have to buy a computer because it has Linux on it.
Josh G @ Sep 18th 2008 3:39AM
Free as in speech, not beer. You're thinking of the wrong "free" :)
WiiTodd @ Sep 18th 2008 7:54AM
He's obviously saying it should be less $. A linux computer does have a lower price tag than a computer with similar specs.
Cactus @ Sep 18th 2008 12:58PM
The iPhone 3G's upfront price is made artificially low by the inflated monthly data rate, which AT&T forces you to get.
If this model sells at the same price but has reasonably-priced data (and SMS) offerings -- the $10+ savings per month over two years would really add up.
PEZ @ Sep 18th 2008 7:12AM
I am thinking it will be double the price without subsidization. $399, possible, $449. Which stinks, but, ya gottadowhatyagottado.
my iphone fell in the wash (1G) so now is a good a time as any to change over to something else.
uwantwhatwhen @ Sep 18th 2008 7:16AM
Well, gee, I dunno, I just got a battery for my Shadow that works for more than a few hours a day. So, why would I want to abandon it and get something else that may or may not require me to have to charge it every few hours? Has anyone used one of these things yet? Will it come with a media player that's Windows Mobile compatible so I don't have to sync everything to a different operating system and waste all those hours? Hell my music library alone is now up to ten gigs and having to convert that much will take days of loading the cd's with this computer, and all my videos . . . .
Hush @ Sep 18th 2008 9:41AM
There will be no compatible apps for a LONG time. You just watch and see. You buy it, get home, and try try try to tweak it and install apps...

SOLD!!!! My Contract has been up with T-Mobile for over a year now but I love the Company so I stay with them!!!
I'd like to buy it without the 2 year agreement if possible but if not and I HAVE to take the discount, well that'll be just fine too.
